Charlotte Walker Carney

Charlotte Walker Carney, age 95, of Kankakee, died Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Manor Care Nursing Home, Kankakee. She was born November 1, 1919 at Minnehaha Springs, West Virginia, the daughter of Boyd Layton and Maude Lockridge Campbell. She graduated from Greenbrier Junior College in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Charlotte married Elmer G. Walker March 6, 1946 in Lewisburg, West Virginia. He died March 30, 1976. She married Thomas V. Carney July 23, 1988 in Kankakee. He died April 29, 1995. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Craig & Pamela Walker of St. Anne; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol & Lary LaGesse of Las Vegas, NV; four step-sons, Thomas J. Carney of Herrin, Edward J. & Janice Carney of Bourbonnais, Gerald A. & Anna Carney of Florida, and Robert J Carney of Chebanse; one step-daughter, Carol & Don Zens of Chebanse; grandchildren, Tracy & Mike Born II, Troy & Jayme Walker, Tricia Walker-Ortman of Bourbonnais; Scott LaGesse, Jeff & Brandi LaGesse of Las Vegas, Nevada; 7 great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren, and several step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Wilma Campbell and Alma Campbell of Lewisburg, West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by three brothers, Bedford Campbell, Newton Campbell, and Craig Campbell; one sister, Janet Frey; two sons, James Walker and William Walker; and one grandson, Trent Walker. She worked at Ashford General Hospital, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia during WWII. After coming to Kankakee in 1946, she worked at Kankakee Roper, A.O. Smith, the Y.M.C.A. for eight years, and retired from Kankakee Regional Office of Education after 16 years of service. She belonged to the Kankakee Emblem Club #414 and the Kankakee County Educational Office Personnel. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church since 1959, having taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon and the chairman of the Mary Circle. She was an avid Cubs fan. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Bourbonnais. Funeral Services and interment will be held in Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Memorials may be made to 1st Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Kankakee Valley.
