Evelyn Margaret Campbell

It is with great sadness that the children of Evelyn Margaret Campbell, 91, formerly of Kankakee, announce the passing of their mother on Friday, January 27, 2017, in Auburn, California. Her final days were spent surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 23, 1925, in Kankakee, to George and Laura (Hertz) Johnston. On April 11, 1947, Evelyn married Clarence ‘Bud’ Campbell of Manteno, whom she had met on a blind date when Bud returned home after the war. They were wed at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kankakee and were longtime members there. Both were active in the church with Evelyn being a Sunday School teacher, in the Women’s Circle, and on various committees. Evelyn worked for Creditors Collection Agency and was retired from the Illinois Department of Welfare. In retirement she enjoyed traveling with Bud, quilting, reading novels and the newspaper, volunteering as a tutor for the ALIVE adult literacy program, and she accompanied Bud in many classic-Mustang activities. Preceding her in death were her parents, half-brother Willard Johnston and, in 2007, both her beloved daughter Linda Campbell and Bud, still the love of her life after 60 years of marriage. Surviving are her children Jean (Troy) Pombert of Tracy, California, Marilyn Campbell (Bob) Rashkin of Bourbonnais, and Jim (Lucy) Campbell of Colfax, California; six grandchildren: Rhonda Ray, Christine Pombert, Mark Pombert, Meadow Nook, Lucas Campbell, and Karlee Silver; six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Clifford and Louise Johnston of Chebanse and sister Carol McCaughey of Loveland, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families, including special nieces Barb Darling and Janet Richard of Kankakee. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 10:30 am on Saturday, February 4th, 2017, at Clancy-Gernon-Hertz Funeral Home, 1480 West Court Street, Kankakee. The funeral service, also at the funeral home, will follow immediately. Pastor Miranda Dinges and Evelyn’s nephew Pastor Carl Johnston will officiate. Private burial will follow at Mound Grove Cemetery in Kankakee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kankakee Public Library, 201 East Merchant Street, Kankakee, IL 60901, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60601. The family also expresses special thanks to the staff of Creek Haven Garden and the Sutter Auburn Faith Hospice Care in Auburn, California, for the compassion and care they provided our dear Evelyn.
