Donna Christine Lawson

Donna Christine Lawson, age 84 of Bellevue, Nebraska formerly of Herscher passed away, after battling three ½ years with Systemic Mastocytosis, on Tuesday, August 2, 2023, in Bellevue. She was born November 7, 1938, in Salina Township, Illinois to Edwin and Ruth (Kukuck) Meyer. Donna graduated from Herscher High School in 1957. She attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Kankakee, Illinois, graduating in May 1960. Donna married Merritt Lawson on June 10, 1961. In 1962 their son Mark was born. After living in DeKalb, Illinois for 2 years, they moved to Downers Grove, Illinois shortly after their second son, Christopher was born in 1970. They lived in this area for the next 34 years until her retirement. During those years, Donna would enjoy helping with various school and Church activities, traveling, and winning a battle with a particularly nasty case of leukemia. She continued her mission of serving as an oncology nurse, at Hinsdale Hospital. Donna took pride and joy in caring for her vulnerable patients and especially those whom she could personally relate to following her own battle with cancer. Donna and Merritt then moved to Boone, North Carolina to live closer to her sister, Virginia Young. In December of 2012, Merritt passed away. Donna continued to serve, travel, and visit family and friends. In 2016, Donna moved to Bellevue, Nebraska, once again making many friends and continuing her travels. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark (Lori) Lawson, Christopher (Misty) Lawson; one sister and one brother-in-law, Virginia (Franklin) Young; six grandchildren, Keziah Wiita (Sam), Michael King (Aaron), Felipe Lawson, Charis Lawson, Amanda Lawson, Elijah Lawson and one great grandson, Ezra Wiita. Donna is preceded in death by her husband, Merritt; her parents, Edwin and Ruth Meyer; and one brother, Kenneth Meyer. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the 10:30 a.m. funeral service on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Clancy-Gernon-Hertz Funeral Home, Kankakee. Interment will follow at Kankakee Memorial Gardens, Kankakee.
