Shirley J. Africano

Shirley J. Africano, age 88, of Bourbonnais passed away Sunday, December 4, 2022 at her daughter’s home in New Buffalo, MI. She was born June 14, 1934 in Kankakee, the daughter of Levi & Bernadette (Lambert) Remillard. She married Nicholas J. Africano on June 26, 1954 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Kankakee. He preceded her in death on March 2, 2022. Shirley was a retired employee of School District 111. She was a graduate of St. Joseph Seminary. She was a member of the Quadrille Club, Something Special Singers, and spent many years working with post-operative breast cancer patients. Shirley was an accomplished seamstress and home decorator. Most of all, Shirley was an incredible mother to seven children. Surviving are six sons, Randy & Diane Africano of Chicago, Tom & Leslie Africano of Chicago, David Africano of Bourbonnais, James Africano of Bourbonnais; Dana & Charmaine Africano of St. Joseph, MI, and Nicholas Africano of Bourbonnais; one daughter, Gina & Blake O’Halloran of Grand Beach, MI; one sister-in-law, Theresa Rebholz of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; twenty-three grandchildren, Nicholas and Sara Africano of Barrington, IL, Kevin and Haley (Africano) Fitzsimons of Buffalo Grove, IL, Simon and Emily (Africano) Hotz of Chicago, Dan and Ellen (Africano) Wagner of Chicago, Henry and Tessa Africano of Chicago, Capt. Frank Africano of Quantico, VA, Sophia Africano of Minocqua, WI, Edie Africano of South Bend, IN, Joe Africano of Colorado Springs, CO, Lauren Africano of Chicago, Charlie Africano of Bourbonnais, Benton Africano of Los Angeles, CA, Alec & Alaina (Africano) LaCasse of Chicago, Mia Africano of St. Joseph, MI, Enzo Africano of St. Joseph, MI, Louis & Madeleine (Africano) Samuels of Louisville, KY, Claudia Africano of Chicago, Marcello Africano of Chicago, Asconio Africano of Chicago, Jack O’Halloran of Chicago, Eve O’Halloran of Tampa, FL, Gavin O’Halloran of Grand Beach, MI, and Charlie O’Halloran of Grand Beach, MI ; and ten great-grandchildren, Luca Africano, Elio Africano, Arthur Fitzsimons, Hazel Hotz, Felix Hotz, Hugo Hotz, Mavis Wagner, Quinn Wagner, Annalynn Samuels, and Russell Samuels. In addition to her husband, Nicholas J. Africano, Shirley is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Leo Remillard. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at St. Rose of Lima Chapel in Kankakee. Cremation rites will be accorded following the Mass. Inurnment will be held at a later date at All Saints Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Uplifted Care.
